For Panamanians, it's very common to hear the popular phrase "Even better than La Arena bread" referring to something that is extremely good. This bread has a special flavor and aroma that set it apart from any other type.

About its Origin

With over 60 years of history, this bread was created in the town of La Arena in Chitré, which is where its name originates. Today, La Arena bread can also be found in other Panamanian provinces such as Chiriquí, Coclé, and Panamá, but these are only adaptations of the original.

One of the most remarkable curiosities about the prestigious La Arena bread is that it continues to be made using traditional methods, with farm-fresh eggs produced in the Azuero Peninsula, maintaining its characteristic fresh flavor and textures that have earned it fame throughout the country.

The Tradition at the Table

Legend tells that this famous and traditional bread was born from the prayers of Doña Eudocia Ávila, who in her prayers asked God to reveal a way to help support her family, which was going through a difficult economic situation.

In her dreams, she received the recipe for how to make it, and she started this endeavor that gradually grew into a network of family bakeries that has supported her entire family.

Among the types of bread she produced were white bread and egg bread rings.

Today, in addition to the traditional La Arena bread, with its unique flavor, aroma, and color, traditional bakeries in La Arena also produce delicious regional sweets, such as mamallenas, cocadas, milk eggs, and many other delicacies that will delight your palate.
